Once a vaudeville and a silent movie theatre, The El Portal Theatre was the first large scale entertainment venue in the North Hollywood area minutes away from ABC, Warner Brothers Studio and Universal Studios. El Portal Theatre has staged thousands of comedies, dramas, musicals, and has been the home of several Academy Award winning films.
Built in 1926 for the large sum of $250,000, the historic El Portal Theatre was almost left to shamble in 1994 when the Northridge Earthquake hit Southern California. With the funding of both state and federal the theatre was renovated within six years at a total of $4.5 million. Since it's renovation the theatre continues to make it's movie making magic and can be spotted in several recent shows such as Glee, Modern Family, Desperate Housewives, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Ghost Whisperer to name a few.
El Portal Theatre for years has been the home of late actress, Debbi Reynolds who performed on its stage 46 times, more than anyone. "And her children were always in the audience, " recalls Peggy Forrest, El Portals co-manager,"Los Angeles Daily News." Till this day, Debbi Reynolds is considered El Portal’s brightest star.”
El Portal Theatre is just walking distance from hotels, shopping and restaurants.
